How poker appeared: the history of the game

One of the most popular and gambling games on Earth is poker. Poker has been known since time immemorial, so it is impossible to determine exactly when it first appeared. Mentions of this game are found in many countries around the world and refer to completely different time periods. The basic rules were different. Nevertheless, the general essence remained the same.

The history of poker in Asia begins in the tenth century. The emperor liked to play this game, and he was considered a pretty good opponent. In those days, cards made of ivory were very expensive and available only to the rich. The following were the basic rules:

There were 25 cards in the deck and only five suits; only five people could sit at the table.

Many historians agree that Asia was the birthplace of poker. Despite this, there are differing opinions.

Mentions of poker in Europe: In the 16th century, poker quickly gained popularity among the Spanish and Italians. Standards included the following characteristics:

only one round was played, after which the cards were revealed; there were no established card combinations, so 2 cards of the same suit or size had to be collected; three cards were dealt per hand.

The idea of “bluffing” first appeared in England in the 18th century, when casinos started playing poker. It is for this reason that the English are so readily credited with the invention of poker. Although they are clearly lagging behind the Asians over time.

Poker in America: most people believe that America is the birthplace of poker. After all, this is the place where it acquired the features of the modern game with all its rules. In 1934, the number of cards was increased to 52 pcs. To this day it continues.

Americans attribute Jonathan Green, their countryman, to the creation of the game. During his travels, he wrote letters that mentioned poker, among other things. However, historians have discovered that he was writing about a pre-existing game that European sailors loved so much during their long voyages. It helped them deal with boredom on the ship.

But the question remains, who invented Texas Hold’em Poker? Judging by the name, they clearly weren’t Europeans. Besides, it’s a reasonable assumption. Texas Hold’em originated in the state of Texas, USA. It quickly became popular in Las Vegas and was actively played in its casinos. It is now becoming more popular than other card games and is becoming a sports game with huge winnings at stake.
